Waterproof Your Roof Before the Summer Rains: A Pretoria Checklist
Quick answer
Pretoria's rains run roughly from October to March. Before and early in the season, clear gutters and outlets, check flashings and roof-to-wall joints, look for cracked or lifted membrane on flat roofs, and book repairs early, because waterproofers get fully booked once the storms start.
The checklist
- Gutters and downpipes: clear leaves and check joints.
- Flat-roof outlets: clear, and check they're big enough. Ponding water is a warning sign.
- Flashings: roof-to-wall, chimney and valley flashings, looking for cracked sealant or lifted tape.
- Membranes: blisters, splits, lifted seams, missing reflective coat.
- Parapets and copings: cracks on top of the wall.
- Tiles and sheets: cracked tiles; loose or rusted screws on IBR.
- Inside: old stains on ceilings. Mark their edges in pencil so you can see if they grow.
Why book early
Membranes need a dry surface. Once the storms start, dry days are shorter and every waterproofer's diary fills up. Booking an inspection now means a planned job, not an emergency.
